My first blog

This is my first time to write an article for the blog.
This is H.Y. from Sendai Factory, new employee.
I would like to write about my hobby. I have been into making plastic models for years.
As I get older, I have more opportunities to make transformable battle planes that are made based on the image of actual and imaginary person, instead of completely imaginary person. That means my taste is changing gradually.
After I started my career, I cannot spend as much time as I used to for making models, however, I would like to keep this hoppy because it is such a joy to complete a project.
It is hard to explain in words what I make, so here are the pictures of the models.
I put the oldest and the latest models.

↑Oldest model Wing Gundam

↑Latest model Macross Gundam

Both of them look unfinished... but I want to believe that I am improving my skill. Kagoshima Sendai factory H.Y.

Efforts by our Design group

We would like to introduce the efforts by our Design group.

Our Design group holds a meeting monthly to exchange information.

Usually a designer is assigned to a project and they rarely have a chance or time to exchange the information during their routine job. By having a meeting every month, they can see differences of design methods of designers and improve the efficiency of their work.

One of the main purposes of this meeting is "Cost Reduction." Based on the information such as improvements and problems from their routine job, they make efforts to select the best design method and unify the design rule, considering the machine performance, cost, lead time, etc.

Designers tend to have their own habit, and work out the way they are used to. Without realizing, with accumulation of those minor design methods, it could be a huge waste at the end. By avoiding the waste, we believe that we can reach the lead time and cost reduction.

How can we satisfy customers' demand and reduce the cost at the same time? It sounds conflicting, however, it is our eternal goal as a manufacturer.

We continue to challenge ourselves to meet this goal!
We can do it!

Visitors of my home

Since last year, we have visitors at our house without permission. I am not sure if they are the same ones or not, but we have them this year again.
It is said that houses with swallows' nests are safe and therefore should not be removed. So we left the nest from last year as is, and they had babies in the nest and raise them in the nest this year again.

When parents bring back food to their nest, babies excitingly open their mouths very big and almost fall down from the nest. When I go close to the nest, the parents try to threaten me to protect babies. I felt that swallows and human are the same in the aspect of raising babies with their heart and soul.

I am going to watch the babies until they grow and leave the nest. I hope they come back here again, babies become parents, and raise babies next year.

One complaint... I wish they clean their droppings...

P-Taro's Room - How to release stress -

Hello! This is P-Taro.

Do you have a way to release stress?
I am going to introduce the way I release my stress.

1. Listening to music

First of all, make an environment to listen to music. At night, turn off
the light in the room and shut down the information from eyes so that you
can concentrate to the sound of the music (I think). It is a fact that the
music sounds better in the dark than in the light.
This is my favorite recently.

"Rain Man's Story" By Yoshichika Tarue
He is not famous, but he is a good pianist. The music is like a movie sound
truck and it has a really good atmosphere.

When you listen to music, don't half-listen as a background music. You have
to be in the musical word and forget about your daily life. If you pay
attention, you can hear phrases and instruments in the background which you
don't notice usually, and it is quite amusing.

2. Play an instrument

This is it!
Recently I have new friends.

1959 Reissue, Les Paul by Gibson, Historic collection.
Also Fender Blues Jr., Tube amp, on the right.

This is a reissue version of 1959 Les Paul. The price of the original
vintage costs 20,000,000 to 30,000,000 yen. Even though this is Reissue,
playing this guitar makes me so happy. No, just looking makes me feel
excited.

I want to remind you that I did not decide to buy this guitar by the
influence of "KEION!" (Japanese TV animation).

Now about the amp...
I heard that the tube amp makes clear your guitar touch so I changed my amp to a tube amp from a transistor amp.

My impression to the sound is...

'"Great acoustic pressure!!"
Maybe the amp that I had was too cheap?

3. Ride a motorcycle

Riding a motorcycle is different from driving a car. You can smell trees
and greens and feel the freedom.
The throb from the engine, speeding... it is great!
Because it is the rainy season now, I cannot enjoy the cruise as much as I
want. I hope to say good-bye to the rainy season soon and say hello to
summer, no... to autumn!

Everybody, let's release stress!

Our Pet Goldfish - Part 2

This is the picture that I shared in my previous blog. Yes, our pet goldfish sleeps like it is dead. When we first saw this, we were so surprised!

This time, it was sleeping on its back!!
Here is the picture that we took.

I don't know why it is sleeping like this.
It is really strange!!

We noticed that other goldfish sleep in a strange way.

Our black pop-eyed goldfish was sleeping upright.

We could not believe it!

Now we are looking forward to finding more interesting ways that the goldfish are sleeping.

Mt.Fuji

I have been visiting one of our customers in Yamanashi Prefecture frequently since July 2010. Last time I visit there was just after the terrible earth quake and tunami happened in the north area of Japan.

And a morning, I saw the beautiful Mt. Fuji! The mountain was so beautiful and I was impressed so much that I had to stop the car and take pictures. Here is a picture!

I have never seen such a magnificent view without any clouds before !! I was so glad and thought of the disaster...

I felt a strong hope from this view..this mountain is a symbol of Japan so
I can feel and believe that our potential is very high as this mountain. We must ecover this situation even far away to get it.

We thank you for your huge support from all over the world.
We have been feeling that the world is united. Thank you very much.

Listen to her song !

I would like to introduce our pet parakeet. We named her "Marron" (chestnut in French) because she came to our house in October two years ago, which is chestnuts season.

She is very good at singing. Her favorite songs are "Mickey Mouse Theme song,"and "Super Mario Theme song,"and her most favorite one is "If you're happy and you know it clap your hands."
Take a look at the video.

http://www.sun-tec.net/blog/img/110228.wmv

When she first sang that song and used her beak for clapping, nobody was watching. We could not believe what she did.
My wife taught her those songs and she usually learns each song in a week.
If she is not into a certain song, she never learns it.

Usually people start to raise parakeets as a pet when they are about 1 month old. When they are babies, they cannot digest food well so we feed them soft food with a straw. By doing so, we build a relationship with birds.
They start to perch on hands. (Marron also perches on hands.) It is relatively easy to keep a bird as a pet compared with cats and dogs and we can communicate with birds to some extent. So I recommend birds for a pet if you hesitate to have dogs or cats.

35th anniversary of the founding of Sun-Tec

Now that I think back on the history of Sun-Tec, I am full of emotions that it was both very short and very long at the same time.

When we started our company, the economy was so bad that we thought it could not get any worse. We felt like we had nothing to lose and started the business with the strong will that we had to find a way.

At that time, we had no customer, and literally we started from zero.
However, thanks to our personal connections, we were introduced to customers, and we won their business one by one. We could gradually establish the reputation as a machine manufacturer.
The full-scale sales started when Mr. Y joined our company who is a professional sales person and got business with major electronics manufacturers. It was a huge turning point for us. That gave Sun-Tec a big confidence and good publicity.

Below is a photo from the trade show in 1979. Because we had a limited budget, when we sold a chain conveyor to our customer, we got their old conveyor. All of our employees (which is only 5 at the time) disassembled parts and rebuild the conveyor like brand new. We connected three of our laminators to the conveyor. Sun-Tec made our first appurtenance to a broader customer base.

After that, the technical development of the LCD Polarizer film laminator was a huge transition for Sun-Tec. This business has been continuing and is now the core of our sales.

It has been 35 years since we started the company. Every company is supposed to change in various elements, but I believe that the biggest elements are "People" and "People's Talent." There is a saying, "Your best
friends are honesty, sincerity and wisdom. " I strongly think that Sun-Tec
has been surrounded by such people internally and externally.

It has been proven over the course of history that we should anticipate big changes from now on. To handle those changes:
- change and evolve flexibly,
- value people's relationship and gather people's wisdom, and
- never forget the appreciations to customers and business partners.
I believe those are the keys for survival.

And do not forget our company motto, "Provide the best quality products and service to our customers so that they continue to be our fan. Think and behave from the point of our customer's view." By doing so, I hope our young generation flies high in the future inside Japan and to the world.

Apple Inc. was established at around the same time as Sun-Tec. Even though the size of the company is small, our goal is to become an "excellent company" the same as Apple Inc. I strongly hope that Sun-Tec continues to aspire to become the "excellent company" for 10, 30 years, and forever.

New year message from president

Happy New year !

Thank you for visiting SUN-TEC blog.

The first article of this year is a message from our president .

成(Achive )
Thank you very much for your support last year.
As a result, we could finish the year with no major issues.
You can never tell what will happen this year, however, our staff will do
our best and devote ourselves to achieve customer satisfaction.
We appreciate your continuous support this year.

We chose ”成” (achieve) for our character this year. I don't remember at
what point, but I have always liked this character best. This character is
one of the few characters that could be a goal in everyone's personal way.
Don't you think so?

I cannot stop thinking about a comment that I think was made by a
neurologist,
"A human brain only works to the person's goal."
I realized that I am caught up with daily matters in sight, and set up a small goal.
This year I would like to set up a bigger goal, keep encouraging myself and
go forward.

We appreciate your continuous support this year.

Thank you very much and best wishes 2011

My hobby

One of the hobbies I enjoy is building plastic models. I started building models when I was ten years old and have been building them ever since.
Recently, I have had new inspiration in my hobby. Two things have happened to inspire me. My favorite hobby shop has started a club for model builders.

It is fun to get together with people who share my interest.
While my primary interest is in building military tanks and trucks, some of the other club members build other subjects such as cars, planes and science fiction. It’s fun and educational to exchange stories and discuss new techniques for building our different models.
For example, for the guys who build cars the important thing is painting a high gloss perfect paint job; for the science fiction guys it’s how to put lights inside the model to have the windows and engines look like they’re running; and for us armor guys it’s about weathering and dioramas to show how they were used.
The second thing to inspire me recently was in August when the International Plastic Modelers Club had there national show and contest here in Phoenix.
There wereover 1000 models on display of all types and levels of experience. Some were built by professional model builders and were truly amazing.
There was also an area were manufacturers sold there model kits. I spent more than I wanted to, but I found some good deals on models and supplies
that are hard to find in the hobby shops. Below is a diorama base I bought at the show which I had to assemble and paint and I added some figures and a Jeep which I had previously built. It was a lot of fun to build and I hope to continue increasing my skills.

What is ordinary in U.S. (Arizona) is not ordinary for Japanese

I moved to Arizona from Japan 13 years ago. Before then, I visited Arizona frequently for 5 years on business.
Without realizing, I am adopting the Arizona life style. When we have visitors from Japan, they are surprised to see what I thought ordinary. Maybe I was the same way about 18 years ago. Here are some examples.

I think Sun-Tec people already know how hot it is in Arizona in summer time. Nobody walks outside. First of all, it is almost impossible to walk to anywhere because most destinations are not walking distance anyway. Maybe because of the heat and distance, there are varieties of drive-through services. Japanese people would expect to see many fast food restaurants with a drive-through window, but many people are surprised to see dry cleaners, pharmacies and banks have a drive-through window, sometime even liquor stores.

Bank

Pharmacy

Because of the heat, many houses in Arizona have pools. If you fly into Phoenix Airport, you can see many houses with pools. Even most apartment complex has a pool.

The other thing that you notice from the air is that there are so many golf courses in Arizona.
If you drive 10 minutes, you will find a golf course.

Golf course

Because I started to play golf in Arizona, I am not so familiar with golf in Japan. Here we play 18 holes without a break. No lunch break after 9th hole, or no bathing after golf. But beer after 18th hole is a MUST (maybe only me?!).

Speaking of beer, most beer bottles here are small size, however, you see big bottles of Japanese beer at Japanese restaurants. I have seen American people drinking big bottle of beer straight from the bottle at restaurants, which always makes me feel weird. I believe that we Japanese should have a good table manner here in U.S., and when in U.S., do as the Americans do, however, I am not used to seeing people chugging straight from the big bottle.

Letter from Michael Choi

Hello, every one of Sun-Tec and our customers and suppliers.
I am happy to have a chance to express of some of my thoughts and share them with you. We have been taking the four words as a routine statement and we are very familiar with them.

They are: “ WE CAN DO IT” with an exclamation mark at the end. Let’s take some moments and think and talk about this words.

First, who are “WE”? This word is not for a single person and more than two, including myself, you, him, her, our customers, our suppliers and all others who are working with us. This word means togetherness, not alone. I think this two letter word, WE is very powerful word in our society when recognize it as a one unity. This word includes our coworkers, superiors and subordinators in our company as well as personal and business relationships around us. I am glad that I am not the only one in this world and there are others whom I work with and I can get help from.

Next, what does the word “CAN” mean? I think this means having a confidence and ability. I detect everyone’s level of CAN are different. I think if something is 100 percent sure, we do not use word CAN, but we should say IS. CAN have some uncertainty and includes will power to make it happen. Depending on our determination and confidence level of thoughts, the word of CAN will be practiced.

Now, let’s think about the word of “DO”. This calls for Action and performance. Thinking only cannot be any part of DO. Only an action will bring us results and rewards. This word DO does not mean an easy work, and requires lots of efforts and hard work to get it done.

Last, what does the word “IT” mean in this sentence? This means all the challenges in our life. In our daily life we face all kind of problems which we need to work at.

With all these meanings of words as described above, how shall we interpret the entire sentence: “WE CAN DO IT !” ?
I am sure every one of us will understand this sentence differently and I will leave this up to everyone to interpret this his/hers own way. I just want to bring this sentence in front of everyone to have some time to think about it.

In my opinion, this sentence tells us that we should take all our challenges (Tasks) with confidence and determination and we should believe ourselves it will be successful at the end. There will be no impossibles by doing hard work together, you and me together.
In other words, once we believe it can be done and willing to work hard together, anything can be done.
It is matter to find a solution and there are no impossible tasks.

Let’s rephrase ourselves “WE CAN DO IT” whenever we face challenges!

Kagoshima (our Sendai factory location) is famous for Black-Pork or Sakura-jima (active volcano)however I believe Imo-shochu(distilled spirit made from Sweet potato) is the best !

When I was early 20s, I could not drink alcohol at all but people around me kept telling me that if you were a man who was born in Kagoshima, you should be able to drink Imo-shochu!!

Machine design continues improving!

Sun-Tec, we have 13 machine -designers in house.
So we do whole process of building machine in house basically.
Our machine-designers are developing ideas day to day to achieve and certified our customers demand and more.

Today, we had a interview with one of our machine-designer, K-san.
He has been working at Sun-Tec for 9 years.

Drawing with 3D CAD / Discussion at office

Q. What is the best part of machine design at Sun-Tec ?
It is that producing something from Zero.
There are various design-works out there.
For example, car design, most of car designers draw only a part of car as I heard.
However, we are drawing a whole of machine from zero by one designer basically at Sun-Tec.
I think this is the best part as machine-designer.

Q. Recently Sun-Tec has introduced 3D-CAD system and you leaded the project.
What are benefits of 3D CAD drawing?

The benefits of 3D-CAD drawing are;

1.It is easy to have a final assembled image so it works for good-balanced machine(part) design.

2.There is a function of "Interference check". You can find interference between part to part easily.

3.Once you get used to 3D system, the drawing time becomes shorter than using 2D-CAD. And it makes less mistakes.

4.3D-picture allows anyone to image the assembling easily.

Q. It is well known in the company that K san has a lot of hobbies. What is the most favorite hobby currently.

I have been enjoying fishing and motor bicycle since teenager.
What I am enjoying most right now is bicycle and tennis.
I have experienced both in my twenties yet I have been working out and lost some weight.
It made me some motivation to start them again.
I feel my thought becomes wider so that I can communicate various people through the hobbies.

Q.Do you want to challenge something in your life and/or work?

I would like to participate some competition or race and want to feel the special sense of tension again.
I am now looking for which game I could challenge.

test-running own designed machine / K san with H san at design room

We also interviewed with his boss of design dept manager.

Q. What is the impression of K san ?

He has had some unique color since he entered Sun-Tec which we did not have before .
He keeps developing his personality on good way still now.
I hope he will organizes the department and aim to make more high quality machines from now on.

Q.What do you expect from member of the design department?

Sometime people say that "Challenge it without fear of failure".
However, I believe that you should not fail.
You have to prepare day to day and think through how you can achieve it without fail.
I hope we take a step further than the current world!

--

K san brings into company good influence so that he is always challenging some targets in work as well as private.
We hope he leads us to make "a step further" machines.

Sun-Tec keeps progress everyday with skill s of our designer team such as K san !

October in Arizona

It’s October and it is one of my favorite times of year in Arizona.
The weather is starting to become cooler and it is great for outdoor activities such as gardening and hiking in the desert areas (two of my favorite activities).
I live in the city of Peoria which is north and west of Phoenix. About a year ago Peoria opened a new hiking trail about 8 Km from my house. It is easy to get to and very well maintained. The trail is set up in three sections, the shortest being less than 2 Km long and the longest is almost 5 Km long. This allows people with various hiking experience to enjoy the trail and choose how long they want to hike. I like to do the entire 5 Km length. The further you go along the trail the fewer people you meet and you can easily forget that you are so close to the city.

trail head and red tailed hawk

Also, since it is so close to the edge of the city and there are fewer houses, there is a good chance to see various desert wildlife. So far, I have seen a fox, coyotes, jackrabbits and many types of birds including the red tailed hawk shown in the picture. It was so peaceful to watch him as rode the rising air currents fromthe desert floor below him. I have also been told by other hikers I have met that they have seen burros and deer in the area during the late fall to early spring.
The other benefit I get from having a hiking trail so close is that I can get in good physical condition for other hikes I am planning for the coming months.
I am planning on going to the Superstition Mountains East of Phoenix and the Saguaro National Monument near Tucson where my daughter lives.

Story about TMS-SA

Today, I am introducing a machine which is like son of Sun-Tec America.
The machine is a film lamination machine (model :TMS-SA).

It has been about 5 years since we set up a office in Arizona and 7 years since we participated SID show first time.

When we had a booth at SID show first time, our high capacity and efficiency machines could not get much interest from American customers.
One of the reason is that there are few mass-production display manufacture companies especially in the United States. Yet there are many R&D or technology development sections.
Then, Mr. M.C. , an American sales reprehensive of us proposed that customers here might need basic and minimum efficiency lamination machines.
So we changed plan and started to develop a simple lamination machine.
We had discussions with engineers and we decided even the reversal table drive can change to manual handle and automatic drive can be option.
So we built a very simple & basic lamination machine and stated additional capabilities are all option.
Actually I felt a little doubt because we had been aimed for providing high capacity and efficiency machines but we now returned to basic technology.
However, In the United States, you can see from automobile advertisements appeal very low price in front and each customer's demand features are option.
Eventually, the idea is worked well! The machine has been installed in R&Ds, high-mix low-volume manufacturing companies and repair manufacture etc..

I learned that customer's demands are really various. Some customer needs full-option but the other customer wants only basic machine.
What we need is providing a machine fulfill the customer's demand and need. And the customer's satisfaction is key to success for us.
In these days, we have been producing TMS-SA series like TMS-SA-CE for Europe region, TMS-SA-P1 for rigid panel to rigid panel lamination and etc...

TMS-SA has been brought in not only the United States and Europe but Asia now. The machine is getting used in all over the world.

Therefore , TMS-SA is son of Sun-Tec America and he is very devoted son!
We will keep providing good machine for fulfill customer's need for all over the world form here .

Kishiwada Danjiri festival

I went to watch the Kishiwada Danjiri festival again this year.

Before I visited the festival actually, I only had watched the Danjiri (float) be pulled around the city at terrific speed by fearless men on TV.

Five years ago, one of my associate took me to the festival. Since then, I have been so interested the float's beautiful carvings and the drum music and some traditional noisemakers rhythm so
I keep visiting the festival every year even by myself.

Danjiri float

The men turn the Danjiri corners almost 90 degrees with timing signals from Taiko (a Japanese drum) or traditional noisemaker.
The techniques are magnificence and very deep.

Danjiri festival

I guess the Taiko rhythms are for Damjiri run speeds.
I have not understood well yet but I think there are 4 type of rhythms.

1) Most rapid rhythm (= (Danjiri) run )
2) Middle rhythm(= gallop)
3) Slow rhythm(= walk )
4) Very slow rhythm (= stop or most slow walk)

I am always moved people pulling the float while chanting "Sooorya, Soorya" lively all together.
If you have chance, please visit there September 14 and 15 (same date on every year).
It is more wonderful than you just watch it on TV.

I am now really enchanted by carving arts on the Danjiri.

Go for a fishy sales rep !

We have sales bases in Hyogo (near Osaka), Tokyo and Arizona and 13 sales reps are working .
They are working to spread Sun-Tec's technologies and machines across Japan and world every day.

Today, we had a interview with M-san who has been working Sun-Tec Tokyo for 4 years .
He is a cheerful guy !

discussion & with machine

Q : It will be your 5th year in Sun-Tec in this October. What are you practicing to be a good sales rep ?

M-san A: All customers have different request, spec, solutions. Sales rep has to organize what we can do best for each customer clearly and quickly.
And then, there are 3 pillars for proposal. (I was taught from my senior associates!)
"Specification", "Price" and " Lead time".
When we can fix those 3 contents clearly with customer, the project would have a good goal..
This is of course a basic rule. Yet if even one element is not clear or almost impossible etc...it would give the customer some trouble...

Sales rep is a company's window !
I will try my best for proposing best solution for our customers.

Q: You have been going a lot of business travel. Which place is most memorable so far?

M-san A: It may be Sapporo, Hokkaido. I went there with my boss in my first year of Sun-tec.
It was December and I fall down into frozen road many times!
And we ate very delicious mutton barbecue with our customer. I hope I have another chance to visit there someday again!

Checking docs

Q: You are a very famous "Maniac gamer" in Sun-tec. What is your most favorite game in this moment.

M-san A : I am enjoying "Bionic Commando" for PS3.
I am racing around battlefield in internet every night.

Q: You read books a lot too ! What is your most impressive book recently?

M-san A: I was really impressed with "Hagetaka" ( = Vulture)
It is a gripping narration of the dramatic development corporate buyout.
I was so excited with Wasizu (the main character)'s bold and delicate judgments.

Q: What is your goals for work and life?

As a sales rep, I want to achieve my sales target every month.
I think I should not chase only target. I believe (and hope) result will came later if I try my best every day.
My life target is that I want to have many children!

::Message from his boss::
When I was at M-san's age, I was holding a compressor one hand and driving car with the other hand and went sales anywhere all the time!
M-san is also active and unhesitating to travel anywhere so I believe he has some talent for being a sales rep.
My image of him is a fish.
I hope he is swimming mighty ocean and swallow a lot plankton even with sea water like Tuna, Bonito or Sardine.
They will die when stop swimming!

We cannot deliver our technology or machine without Sales rep's activities.
We all hope Sun-Tec's machines are used across world more and more by them.

Our energetic sales reps like M-san are looking for your trouble for " Lamination, labeling or taping".
Please feel free to contact us.

Japanese culture club in Arizona

It has been 12 years since I left Japan and moved to Arizona.
Even before I moved to Arizona, I was asked some questions about Japan
by foreigners and embarrassingly I could not answer their questions sometime.
I have never done anything involved with Japanese culture in the past,
however, a friend of mine asked me to be a part of the Japanese
Culture Club of Arizona which is a non-profit organization to
introduce Japanese culture to people in Arizona.
The club's board is comprised of six Japanese women ages from 30th to
80th with a lot of energy.
Hatsugama

Our official activity started this year.
For new year, we held "Hatsugama" which is a new year's tea ceremony.
All the members wore Kimono and welcomed guests.
I wore Kimono only twice in Japan, and never imagined that I wore
Kimono in Arizona!
The event could not be as authentic as the one in Japan, however, the
guests enjoyed the tea ceremony very much.

In the spring, we held an "Origami" seminar.
We explained the history of Origami, taught how to fold Japanese
dolls, and made chopsticks holders, bookmarks, and greeting cards with them.
Origami & Roka Akor

The summer event was a Japanese Cooking class.
The event was held at Robatayaki restaurant and it was very successful.
Robatayaki means grilling meat, seafood, and vegetables with charcoals.
These several years, Japanese food has been very popular in Arizona
and American people like to BBQ outside.
Because of those reasons, we think that the cooking class was
successful and people enjoyed it.

The fall event will be a tea ceremony at Raku Festival in Chandler.
Guests can enjoy tea and sweets, and take a tea bowl home!
At this festival, there will be a Japanese Taiko drum performance, too.

Ikebana flower arrangement demonstration, Kimono fashion show, Bonsai
class, etc... there are so many plans ahead.
By introducing Japanese culture to people in Arizona, I am actually
learning about Japanese culture also.
Maybe because I do not live in Japan, I feel like I want to be close
to Japanese culture more.
