October in Arizona

It’s October and it is one of my favorite times of year in Arizona.
The weather is starting to become cooler and it is great for outdoor activities such as gardening and hiking in the desert areas (two of my favorite activities).
I live in the city of Peoria which is north and west of Phoenix. About a year ago Peoria opened a new hiking trail about 8 Km from my house. It is easy to get to and very well maintained. The trail is set up in three sections, the shortest being less than 2 Km long and the longest is almost 5 Km long. This allows people with various hiking experience to enjoy the trail and choose how long they want to hike. I like to do the entire 5 Km length. The further you go along the trail the fewer people you meet and you can easily forget that you are so close to the city.

trail head and red tailed hawk

Also, since it is so close to the edge of the city and there are fewer houses, there is a good chance to see various desert wildlife. So far, I have seen a fox, coyotes, jackrabbits and many types of birds including the red tailed hawk shown in the picture. It was so peaceful to watch him as rode the rising air currents fromthe desert floor below him. I have also been told by other hikers I have met that they have seen burros and deer in the area during the late fall to early spring.
The other benefit I get from having a hiking trail so close is that I can get in good physical condition for other hikes I am planning for the coming months.
I am planning on going to the Superstition Mountains East of Phoenix and the Saguaro National Monument near Tucson where my daughter lives.

Story about TMS-SA

Today, I am introducing a machine which is like son of Sun-Tec America.
The machine is a film lamination machine (model :TMS-SA).

It has been about 5 years since we set up a office in Arizona and 7 years since we participated SID show first time.

When we had a booth at SID show first time, our high capacity and efficiency machines could not get much interest from American customers.
One of the reason is that there are few mass-production display manufacture companies especially in the United States. Yet there are many R&D or technology development sections.
Then, Mr. M.C. , an American sales reprehensive of us proposed that customers here might need basic and minimum efficiency lamination machines.
So we changed plan and started to develop a simple lamination machine.
We had discussions with engineers and we decided even the reversal table drive can change to manual handle and automatic drive can be option.
So we built a very simple & basic lamination machine and stated additional capabilities are all option.
Actually I felt a little doubt because we had been aimed for providing high capacity and efficiency machines but we now returned to basic technology.
However, In the United States, you can see from automobile advertisements appeal very low price in front and each customer's demand features are option.
Eventually, the idea is worked well! The machine has been installed in R&Ds, high-mix low-volume manufacturing companies and repair manufacture etc..

I learned that customer's demands are really various. Some customer needs full-option but the other customer wants only basic machine.
What we need is providing a machine fulfill the customer's demand and need. And the customer's satisfaction is key to success for us.
In these days, we have been producing TMS-SA series like TMS-SA-CE for Europe region, TMS-SA-P1 for rigid panel to rigid panel lamination and etc...

TMS-SA has been brought in not only the United States and Europe but Asia now. The machine is getting used in all over the world.

Therefore , TMS-SA is son of Sun-Tec America and he is very devoted son!
We will keep providing good machine for fulfill customer's need for all over the world form here .

Kishiwada Danjiri festival

I went to watch the Kishiwada Danjiri festival again this year.

Before I visited the festival actually, I only had watched the Danjiri (float) be pulled around the city at terrific speed by fearless men on TV.

Five years ago, one of my associate took me to the festival. Since then, I have been so interested the float's beautiful carvings and the drum music and some traditional noisemakers rhythm so
I keep visiting the festival every year even by myself.

Danjiri float

The men turn the Danjiri corners almost 90 degrees with timing signals from Taiko (a Japanese drum) or traditional noisemaker.
The techniques are magnificence and very deep.

Danjiri festival

I guess the Taiko rhythms are for Damjiri run speeds.
I have not understood well yet but I think there are 4 type of rhythms.

1) Most rapid rhythm (= (Danjiri) run )
2) Middle rhythm(= gallop)
3) Slow rhythm(= walk )
4) Very slow rhythm (= stop or most slow walk)

I am always moved people pulling the float while chanting "Sooorya, Soorya" lively all together.
If you have chance, please visit there September 14 and 15 (same date on every year).
It is more wonderful than you just watch it on TV.

I am now really enchanted by carving arts on the Danjiri.

Go for a fishy sales rep !

We have sales bases in Hyogo (near Osaka), Tokyo and Arizona and 13 sales reps are working .
They are working to spread Sun-Tec's technologies and machines across Japan and world every day.

Today, we had a interview with M-san who has been working Sun-Tec Tokyo for 4 years .
He is a cheerful guy !

discussion & with machine

Q : It will be your 5th year in Sun-Tec in this October. What are you practicing to be a good sales rep ?

M-san A: All customers have different request, spec, solutions. Sales rep has to organize what we can do best for each customer clearly and quickly.
And then, there are 3 pillars for proposal. (I was taught from my senior associates!)
"Specification", "Price" and " Lead time".
When we can fix those 3 contents clearly with customer, the project would have a good goal..
This is of course a basic rule. Yet if even one element is not clear or almost impossible etc...it would give the customer some trouble...

Sales rep is a company's window !
I will try my best for proposing best solution for our customers.

Q: You have been going a lot of business travel. Which place is most memorable so far?

M-san A: It may be Sapporo, Hokkaido. I went there with my boss in my first year of Sun-tec.
It was December and I fall down into frozen road many times!
And we ate very delicious mutton barbecue with our customer. I hope I have another chance to visit there someday again!

Checking docs

Q: You are a very famous "Maniac gamer" in Sun-tec. What is your most favorite game in this moment.

M-san A : I am enjoying "Bionic Commando" for PS3.
I am racing around battlefield in internet every night.

Q: You read books a lot too ! What is your most impressive book recently?

M-san A: I was really impressed with "Hagetaka" ( = Vulture)
It is a gripping narration of the dramatic development corporate buyout.
I was so excited with Wasizu (the main character)'s bold and delicate judgments.

Q: What is your goals for work and life?

As a sales rep, I want to achieve my sales target every month.
I think I should not chase only target. I believe (and hope) result will came later if I try my best every day.
My life target is that I want to have many children!

::Message from his boss::
When I was at M-san's age, I was holding a compressor one hand and driving car with the other hand and went sales anywhere all the time!
M-san is also active and unhesitating to travel anywhere so I believe he has some talent for being a sales rep.
My image of him is a fish.
I hope he is swimming mighty ocean and swallow a lot plankton even with sea water like Tuna, Bonito or Sardine.
They will die when stop swimming!

We cannot deliver our technology or machine without Sales rep's activities.
We all hope Sun-Tec's machines are used across world more and more by them.

Our energetic sales reps like M-san are looking for your trouble for " Lamination, labeling or taping".
Please feel free to contact us.

Japanese culture club in Arizona

It has been 12 years since I left Japan and moved to Arizona.
Even before I moved to Arizona, I was asked some questions about Japan
by foreigners and embarrassingly I could not answer their questions sometime.
I have never done anything involved with Japanese culture in the past,
however, a friend of mine asked me to be a part of the Japanese
Culture Club of Arizona which is a non-profit organization to
introduce Japanese culture to people in Arizona.
The club's board is comprised of six Japanese women ages from 30th to
80th with a lot of energy.
Hatsugama

Our official activity started this year.
For new year, we held "Hatsugama" which is a new year's tea ceremony.
All the members wore Kimono and welcomed guests.
I wore Kimono only twice in Japan, and never imagined that I wore
Kimono in Arizona!
The event could not be as authentic as the one in Japan, however, the
guests enjoyed the tea ceremony very much.

In the spring, we held an "Origami" seminar.
We explained the history of Origami, taught how to fold Japanese
dolls, and made chopsticks holders, bookmarks, and greeting cards with them.
Origami & Roka Akor

The summer event was a Japanese Cooking class.
The event was held at Robatayaki restaurant and it was very successful.
Robatayaki means grilling meat, seafood, and vegetables with charcoals.
These several years, Japanese food has been very popular in Arizona
and American people like to BBQ outside.
Because of those reasons, we think that the cooking class was
successful and people enjoyed it.

The fall event will be a tea ceremony at Raku Festival in Chandler.
Guests can enjoy tea and sweets, and take a tea bowl home!
At this festival, there will be a Japanese Taiko drum performance, too.

Ikebana flower arrangement demonstration, Kimono fashion show, Bonsai
class, etc... there are so many plans ahead.
By introducing Japanese culture to people in Arizona, I am actually
learning about Japanese culture also.
Maybe because I do not live in Japan, I feel like I want to be close
to Japanese culture more.
